St. John's University, Queens NY

Pros:
  • Wonderful adjuncts.
  • Nice appearance.
  • Wireless campus
  • Laptop to use for your time at St. John's
Cons:
  • Over priced.
  • Sub-par education.
  • Sub-par professors, they either don't know the material or know the material but cant teach worth their life.
  • Lack of commuter involvement/activities on campus. If you want the "college experience" live on campus.
  • Student government is inactive/near impotent.
  • School wastes money like crazy. (i.e. mowing the lawn twice a day)
  • Lots of red-tape when it comes to dealing with administrators.
  • Art studios are a mess (particularly the photography dark room. 1/3 of the enlargers didnt work and ceiling tiles coming off the ceiling)
  • Computer lab is almost always overcrowded.
  • Little if any credits transfer in or out.
  • Will use brand new editions of textbooks practically every semester.
  • Lack of commuter parking spaces (I frequently see people with St. John's parking permits parked out on the street)
  • Lack of availability of housing overall, but particularly for upperclassmen (they're remedying this problem by tearing up one of the parking lots and turning them into town houses)
  • Will probably have to take out loans and work a full time job or two to pay for expenses.
  • Ranked in Princeton Review's Top 10 for Least Happy Students
  • Ranked in Princeton Review's Top 10 for Professors make themselves scarce
  • Doesn't like to award much financial aid
  • Low acceptance standards. They say their acceptance GPA is 3.20 out of 4.0. I've met people who have had 2.0 GPAs in HS with low SATs (old one) that got into St. John's.
  • They're a "For-profit" institution, pretending to be "non-profit."
  • Involved in the Student Loan lending scandal.
  • Student faculty ratio is probably closer to 22:1, there are other faculty members, but they avoid you like the plague so you never really see them.
  • Total need-based gift aid statistic, most likely includes both institution gift aid AND government gift aid.
  • Over-rated
  • Shitty laptops. They WILL break down on you. If your laptop battery dies, they expect YOU, the student, to pay $180 to buy a new one to use SCHOOL property, even though it is, their property.
  • Laptop repair shop is almost always crowded because of the low quality laptops.
  • Asian studies department is a joke. Many required classes are not offered.
  • Paid "Language Lab fee" of $50 to use a language lab. Did not have access to a language lab because the department didn't have the money to give us a language lab. (Yes, you read that right. We paid a fee to use the language lab, but the department didn't have the money to actually provide it.)
Core classes required for all students:
  • 3 Philosophies
  • 3 Theologies
  • 2 Language
  • 1 Science
  • 3 English
  • 1 History
  • 1 DNY - This class stands for "Discover New York," it's basically a bullshit class that doesn't get accepted at any other university anywhere, because no other university has it. It can range from the mundane of "History of NY" to a class that makes you go wtf? such as "Ethnomusicology."
